Engaging the “Other” for the Common Good: Civil Discourse in Marianist Higher Education
Featuring Tim Shaffer, Ph.D.
This lecture will explore the topics of civil discourse, deliberative dialogue, and political polarization within higher education, especially in the context of Marianist universities. The lecture draws on Marianist values such as community, inclusivity, and social justice, to provide a foundation for civil discourse during a time of partisanship and rancor. Shaffer will situate this unique moment in time, exploring practical strategies for promoting respectful and open conversations in classrooms, on campus, and in the community. Finally, the lecture will contextualize the concept of the "common good” and the importance of dialogue and understanding in achieving collective well-being, especially as we seek to foster community and prepare students to become responsible and compassionate citizens.
