The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice will host its annual Immigration Symposium, focusing on the practical aspects of immigration law and the current policy debates surrounding the field.
Attendees will have the opportunity to hear a variety of notable immigration attorneys, scholars, and leaders speak on current issues within the field of immigration law in the United States.
This CLE event is pending approval by the State Bar of Texas for 6.5 CLE credit hours (including 1 hour of ethics).
Family Detention Panel
Moderated by Clinical Professor Erica Schommer of the St. Mary’s University School of Law Immigration and Human Rights Clinic, panelists will discuss current issues with family detention, the federal government’s practice of detaining families who are fleeing dangerous conditions in their home countries and seeking asylum in the United States, the implications of the prolonged detention of children, and will provide tips to better serve such a vulnerable population. Panelists include Manoj Govindaiah, Director of Litigation at RAICES and Shalyn Fluharty, Managing Attorney at the Dilley Pro Bono Project and Director of Texas RioGrande Legal Aid’s Family Detention Project.
