BRO. JEROME LOUIS MATZ, S.M. died in the service of the Blessed Virgin Mary on July 12, 2022, at the age of 81 and with 62 years of vowed life. He was born in Milwaukee, WI. on August 7, 1940, the son of Alphonse Valentine Matz and Marion Margaret Blanz.
Bro. Matz met the Marianists at Don Bosco High School in Milwaukee, WI. After graduation he entered the novitiate at Galesville, WI., and professed First Vows on September 5, 1959. Four years later, on August 18, 1963, he made his Perpetual Profession. As a Marianist, he began his Scholasticate studies first at Maryhurst in Kirkwood MO. and later at St. Mary University in San Antonio, TX. where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in History in 1962. Bro. Matz then pursued graduate studies at St. Louis University in St. Louis, earning a PhD in Sociology in 1968.
For most of the next 36 years, Brother Jerome would serve on the faculty and in leadership positions at St. Mary’s University. His tenure there included extensive experience teaching courses in Sociology, along with several different terms as Chair of the Sociology Department. In addition, he served as Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences from 1981-83. After retiring from the faculty at St. Mary’s University in 2005, he continued to living in San Antonio, until moving to the Marianist Residence Community in 2009 where he served for many years as Guest Master of the Marianist Guest House.
Brother Jerome eagerly put his expertise in sociology to work on behalf of many religious associations and congregations, including the Society of Mary, serving as research director on more than 35 different surveys – helping client organizations identify and understand their strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. Among his favorite hobbies are a collection of exotic rock crystals and an extensive file of unusual and creatively designed business cards.
Bro. Jerome had an older brother, Robert (deceased), who had three children, William, Tasha Marie and Christina (Thomas) Morris. He is survived by several cousins and second cousins.
Funeral Arrangements:
Thursday, July 21, 2022, 6:30 PM Private Viewing and 7:00 PM Rosary (for Marianists and family) at the Marianist Residence Chapel
Friday, July 22, 2022, 9:15 AM Viewing and 10:00 AM Mass at Assumption Chapel (St. Mary’s University). Burial will be in the Marianist Cemetery immediately following the Mass.
Mass will be Live-Streamed starting @ 9:50 AM
