About the Alice Wright Franzke Feminist Award
The award was established by the St. Mary’s University Women’s Caucus in March 1990 to commemorate the life and work of Alice Wright Franzke, Ph.D., a professor in the Sociology Department at St. Mary’s from 1982 to 1989. Franzke was an inspirational model of feminist activism and civic engagement who embodied a commitment to justice and peace. The award honors members of the St. Mary’s community who promote peace, empowerment, civic engagement, cooperation, equality and respect of all persons. The award commemorates Franzke’s energy and work with women, civil rights and civic involvement. Franzke was the coordinator for a Peace and Justice minor program, the moderator of the student peace group, and a founding member of the former President’s Peace Commission. Together with 39 other St. Mary’s women, she co-founded the Women’s Caucus in 1989. She represented St. Mary’s on the San Antonio Branch of the American Association of University Women, was a tireless advocate for nontraditional students at St. Mary’s, and was active with the Bexar Women’s Political Caucus. Franzke was inducted as a scholar into the St. Mary’s Academy of Scholars in 1989. Selection Criteria Actively engaged in efforts to promote justice and peace locally, regionally or globally. Considered an exemplary role model of civic engagement. Works in a collaborative manner that respects diverse people and traditions. For more information, visit . lib.stmarytx.edu/whm/franzke
