The Department of Drama at St. Mary’s University provides for the artistic foundation of the University and promotes aesthetic awareness in the community. Through the medium of theatre, we expose it as a collaborative and communal art that reveals any facet of human condition at a given time. Its transformative nature ultimately results in a work that engages the theatre artist with an audience.
We foster a student’s inherent creativity and nurture it into that theatrical expression. Students actively partake in the interactive dynamic between apprentice and professional through scholarship, training and performance. Our academic offerings demonstrate a broad enough exposure to methodology, so that it enhances their exposure to theatre and its impact on their lives.
Stage productions by St. Mary’s students go way back in our history, at least to 1895, as documented in our archives, including old Rattler newspapers, performances by groups called The Mission Players, The Cameo Players, The St. Mary’s Theatre Guild, St. Mary’s Drama Club and The Shoestring Players.
